Originally an architect by profession, Rudolf Stockar (1886 – 1957) gained recognition especially as a designer of ceramics, glass, jewelry and furniture.

His professional life was particularly strongly connected with the applied arts between 1915 and 1927, when he worked as the director of Artěl – an important cooperative of visual artists that ensured the production and sale of its members' designs. Stockar himself applied dozens of designs for glass, ceramics, metal objects, jewelry and furniture in Artěl.

Whatever style he created during his career - Czech Cubism, National Style, Art Deco or Functionalism - all his designs bear the stamp of a self-confident original creator who is in complete control of the material.
